Clear Lake

A3

Oil pastel on card

An open body of water can instantly calm my mind. This is what I wanted to draw- a stylised depiction of water unreferenced, only drawing from the feeling it evokes.

Layers of blue were built up in ‘scribbles’ around a clear centre point, where the light comes in, gradually going darker to create reflections. I blended some green into it, to create cohesiveness with the bright green grass, which has orange and violet specked in to emphasise the green.

The water fades off into the paper itself. I felt leaving it blank represented perfectly the feelings I was pouring into this piece, hunched over to where it was stuck to my wall with masking tape, cross legged on my hard floor. (Only having a bedroom with sloped ceilings to create isn’t ideal, but I make do!) When I look out at water, the way it shines, and listen to the lapping of waves, everything in my mind seems to quiet, fading away. Having the water fade out into nothingness mirrors this.
